If you are travelling to South Korea to see any of the winter Olympic events or even just watching at home, we have put together a little guide to the winter Olympic games locations to compliment the recent article on the South Korean won currency. The events are taking place from 8th February with the closing ceremony on Sunday 25th February.
There are seven different sports involving 15 disciplines and a total of 102 events.
- Ice hockey
Of particular interest to us is the British Women’s bobsleigh team captained by Mica McNeill (pictured above) that had their funding withdrawn by the national governing body in September last year, then raised the necessary funding of over £30,000 so they could compete in the Oympics from a crowdfunding campaign. The very best of luck to them and lets hope they can get on to the podium!
PyeongChang is the area hosting the winter olympic events and is located in the Taebaeksan Mountains of Gangwon-do Province. Approximately 60% of the total area is over 700metres above sea level. PyeongChang is a center of winter sports in Korea, where visitors can experience not only exciting winter sports but also other seasonal entertainment such as golf and water parks.
Gangneung is the location for the Olympic park and is a coastal city of the Yeongdong region of Gangwon-do Province. It is a major tourist city in Korea and because there are both sea and mountain areas in Gangneung, visitors can enjoy various leisure sports such as sea bathing, surfing, climbing, biking, and golf. Also, coffee festivals and various cultural performances are held every Autumn.
The Infographic above shows in detail where each of the events are taking place. The official PyeongChang 2018 website has lots of information about the sporting and cultural events taking place and if you are lucky enough to be visiting then there is a dedicated page for spectators.
If you need currency for your visit then our dedicated South Korean Won page will show you the best deals available from the major suppliers. You can also use our click and collect page to find a supplier near you.
